Dial-up connection in Windows 98 SE / Windows 2000

This setup guide will walk you through the Internet Connection Wizard. The Wizard is built into Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows 2000 Professional, and is also available on most machines with Internet Explorer 5.

Before you begin this tutorial you must already....

  • have Windows 98/2000 installed on your computer
  • have a Setarnet account
  • have your modem installed
  • have a phone cord connecting your modem to the phone wall jack

1. You can get started one of two ways. If you have a Connect to the Internet icon on your desktop, double-click on it. If you do not have that icon, click on your Start button and choose Settings - Control Panel. Double-click on the Internet Options. Click on the connections tab, and click on the Setup button.

2. In the Welcome to the Internet Connection Wizard, choose the 3rd option (I want to set up my Internet connection manually.....) and click on Next.

3. In the Setting up your Internet connection window, choose the 1st option (Connect through a phone line and modem) and click on Next.

4. In the Choose Modem window use the drop down list to select a modem to use to connect to the Internet and click on Next.

5. In the Step 1 of 3: Internet account.... window enter Setarnet Access Number 5880606. Deselect Use area code and dialing rules. Click Next.

6. In the Step 2 of 3: Internet account.... window enter your Setarnet username and password and click Next.

7. In the Step 3 of 3: Configuring your Computer window enter a Connection Name e.g. Connection to 5880606. Click Next.

8. If you would like to setup your Internet Mail Account, choose Yes and click Next. (If you do not want to setup your email account now, choose No and proceed to step #14.)

9. In the Internet Mail Account window, choose the 1st option (Create a new Internet mail account) and click on Next.

10. In the Your Name Window enter your name in the Display name. e.g. John Smith. Click Next.

11. In the Internet E-mail Address window enter your e-mail address all in lower case in the E-mail address box e.g. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Click Next.

12. In the E-mail Server Names window enter pop3.setarnet.aw for both Incoming and Outgoing mail server.

13. In the Internet Mail Logon window, enter your POP account name (which may be filled already) and password, then click on Next.

14. Click on Finish to complete your configuration.

Now you have completed the setup wizard, you are ready to connect. If you did not uncheck the ...connect immediately.. box in step 13, Internet Explorer will start automatically and prompt you to connect.

To access the World Wide Web, double-click on the Internet Explorer icon on your desktop.

You will be using Outlook Express if you elected to setup your mail and/ or news accounts. You will either have an icon for Outlook Express on your desktop, or it can be found in your Program menu by clicking on Start - Programs.
